English does have "milliard" = 10^9 but for some reason it dropped out
of use. I've never heard anyone say it, and I've only ever seen it
printed in books discussing this very point which are >50 years old.

I pronounce it like a small metal container for urine, but I don't
know if that's "correct" or not. Pecans are pretty rare over here
(apart from certain breakfast cereals).
