Different kernels use different modules. You won't have your old
modules available with your new kernel, unless you specifically
selected to compile new modules during kernel configuration process.

You should not touch modules.conf, edit /etc/modules instead for 
modules which you want load during startup and then run update-modules.

I believe that you can achieve same thing with "modconf".
