Which reminds me, that people may find this useful...

Problem: APIC-enabled kernel on VIA chipset hangs very early in
booting (2.4.20, 82C686)

Solution: Disable APIC in BIOS... Instead of hanging, the kernel
re-enables the APIC and proceeds merrily on its way.
