I just went through this yesterday on my machine. You MUST compile in support for the device your root fs is located on. In my case, I opted for IDE as a module. Well, the modules are located on the root fs (an IDE disk on my machine), which must be mounted before modules become accessible. So the kernel is unable to communicate to the disk.
