Frozen cursor-no /dev/psaux

I've installed Debian 3.0r1 4 times (from scratch) trying to get things the way they should be and each time the install ends up with a frozen cursor in KDE and Gnome. I could move the cursor with the numeric keypad but not with an ordinary mouse.

The first three times the cursor froze, I tried to fix things through dselect but couldn't determine what to
select.

Fortunately, I also have Progeny installed and working fine
so I cheated. I compared Progeny and Debian to see what the difference was and discovered that /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 was absent in Debian---no /dev/psaux and a few other things.

I have some aliases in Progeny that let me access any partition and drive and I used one to copy /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 from Progeny to Debian. Debian's
KDE, Gnome, and X windows work fine now.

Nowhere during the installation did there seem to be an opportunity to install a mouse. Is there something that
could have been done other than what I did?

Comments??
