I also had problems running pre 1.30 Q3A on my debian box. If I remember
correctly, they fixed a problem in point release 1.31 or 1.32 that which
made it incompatible with the new glibc... Anyway, 1.32 stopped the
segfaults for me. 
It seems likely that the demo version could be running an older version,
which makes it incompatible with the glibc. I may well be barking up the
wrong tree, but you could try downloading the point release, as it
contains the game minus the .pak files. You may be able to use the .pak
files from the demo with the point release, just to test it... Then, if
it works, go out and grab yourself a platinum copy of Q3A.
