Black screen with XFree86 on laptop

Hi,
after I got my web server up and running, I was encouraged to try
another challenge: To give my old laptop, an aging Dell Latitude
CPi266XT, a new life with Woody.

Everything worked fine until I started messing around with the GUI,
which initially came up with an 800 by 600 resolution that looked awful
on the 1024x768 LCD. I then tried to manually change some of the
settings in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, notably the color-depth which I
initially had set to 24 bits but actually is only 16 bits.

I've run the "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" utility for a number of
times from a remote tty with various options and subsequent reboots, but
I end up with a black screen unless I use the kernel framebuffer, in
which case I get a beautiful 1024 by 768 desktop where nothing happens.
In every case, an inspection with top from the remote tty shows that the
XFree86 process slurps 98% of the system resources.

The video controller is a NeoMagic 2160 with 2MB RAM. It works ok with
Windows 2000.

I'm totally in the dark here. Can anybody offer a hint?

regards,
