It's simple the ".iso" file has to be burned directly onto CD as a
series of ones and zeros. Then you end up with a standard Debian CD
with all the files in place to boot off of.
If you don't you end up with a cd with one single huge iso file on it.
It's like creating a boot floppy from a floppy image. You use rawrite
or dd to copy it "raw" to the floppy. You don't just copy it onto the
floppy.
