This isn't just an Americanism.  Commonwealthers are just as guilty,
many assume anybody with a vaguely British accent is from the
commonwealths and francophones are automatically Quebecois or
Parisian.  Much of the rest of the world (the EU in particular) that
I've come into contact with seem to assume that Americans are the only
ones that make assumptions on where someone's from when it seems to me
that pretty much any part of the world except Antartica has fought
wars based on those assumptions within the last 250 years.  

Cut the crap, folks.  Odds are you've made similar assumptions in your
life no matter where you're from.
