Computer hangs under Gnome
I have been having this problem with my computer where it hangs (i.e.,
monitor and HDD power down and don't wake up) after sitting idle for about 1
hour. I originally thought that it had something to do with an
electrostatic disharge, so I reflashed the BIOS and did a bunch of other
things.
Further experimentation lead me to the observation that this behavior was
occurring under Linux only (and not under WinXP Pro, with which I dual
boot). I normally use Gnome 2.0 as my desktop, but yesterday I went into
KDE for something. I forgot about it and left the machine idle. When I
came back a couple of hours later the machine woke up like it should. So I
left the machine idle in KDE overnight and here is the result:

So, in the first case, under gnome, when GConf server shuts down the
machine hangs and I must restart when I come back. But, under KDE the GConf
server shuts down and has no effect. Why is this and how do I fix it?
