getting networking to work [was Re: ethernet card]

Greetings.

Going to be getting DSL, soon, and I just don't know what make/model of ethernet card I should get.

Thanks, all.

I got a tulip-esque card (Accton EN1207F-TX based) "SpeedStream 1020", and finally got
it up with a new kernel. I'm guessing I probably compiled with a few
unnecessary parameters in kernel .config, but . . . .

For the most part, everything seems to be o.k., and tulip-diag/ifconfig/etc. are
giving me the green light (so to speak), but I'm concerned because I can't get
to the http://192.168.254.254/ in the router--"SpeedStream 2602" (caveat: no
modem/network connection to test, yet).

It registers via etherconf, and seems to be there, but I'm concerned about the
inability to connect to the router. I've tried choosing 'No' to DHCP in etherconf, and all sorts of suggestions in about every HOWTO I could find, but things just aren't working.

o.k., I admit this is fun, but I'm totally clueless ;-)
