So should it be in /etc/ppp/peers/ukonline or /etc/ppp/options?

pppconfig (2.0.14) didn't actually put it in either file, though I did
select Dynamic. I put it in manually (tried both files), but it still
doesn't work.

There's probably a clue in that, but it doesn't reveal itself to me!
