I compile my own kernels. But the problem was that it wasn't sharp.
The resolution was no problem, I've tried many different ones,
starting from vga=ask.

Look at the thread "Extirpating framebuffer" this August, where
Colin Watson showed how it works in the console too if you get it
from unstable.
