Problems upgrading to Gnome2

I installed woody without apparent problems. That's the good news. The bad
news is that one of the first things I tried to do was to upgrade to gnome2
and gdm2. I searched on the web and found the instructions of how to get the
backport of Gnome2 by Gustavo Noronha. I had errors in 10 or 12 of the
configure scripts - all the same. There were improperly encoded UTF-8
sequences (Did I not have support for a particular language installed?). But
I finally finished that (however improperly).

When I rebooted I got a default desktop and default panel - but they weren't
connected. That is, both were floating free on top of the screen. I couldn't
get the panel within the desktop, so I could only use one or the other.
Selecting the desktop would bring it to the front, covering the panel.

Can someone help me get a desktop with a panel inside the desktop?

Also, the default desktop and panel had a 'strange' border - each had a
header that I'm not used to. I'm guessing that it is a configuration item to
remove the headers and have them borderless? How can I do that?
