Rob, thanks for the example. Yes, it clearly shows the same package may have much more than three package files listed, considering all the different archs.

Now, if all the three current distributions are in the same pool, it must be possible that the same package has three versions co-existing in the same directory, and only Packages.gz from different distribution can tell apt-get which version to pick up?

As far as I know, that is how it works.  Have a look at
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/z/zsh/, for example.
