 I had this problem with my via sound module while using esd, when I
stopped esd the problem went away.  I've since replaced my motherboard
and use a Yamaha YMF724 sound card with the OSS driver and have no
problems with esd and sound. 

  One thing i've noticed is that if I open up a terminal and go "xmms&" , xmms
> will start up and if I adjust the volume via the xmms volume bar, then the
