Dave,
I have no idea if this will work, but i'd personally suggest removing the
sources.list file. Then recreate it apt-setup. I'm not sure if this will
work, i'm new to linux, but it does seem that it is having a problem reading
the packages. Try the posts on these sites as well:

Oops -- My frustration is showing rather badly. I apologize for that! Yes
some did try to help, but my inability and ignorance kept me from getting
anywhere. I'm the one responsible. One thing works and something else
breaks.
When the last request went essentially unanswered I wondered if I would
get a response. In spite of the fact that I have always found Debian User
to be the friendlyiest place anywhere.
