as someone else noted you can install the kernel-package and
build from source but you can also use the binaries. a co worker
installed debian 3.0 about a week ago, and going from 2.2.20 to
2.4.18(he wanted it for the Matrox commercial drivers), was as
simple as apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-i686 i believe,
edited lilo.conf to add an initrd entry, re-loaded lilo and
rebooted.
I still use 2.2.19 on all my systems though.
