Did you search the archives? This has been a recurring
topic of discussion. In my case, it happened when I
upgraded X from 3.3.x to 4.x and all of the fonts
didnt' get upgraded. I also did the upgrade while X
was running and I don't think the xserver itself got
upgraded, IIRC.
