Can you post what exactly happened? Tell me more. I am worried.
If you are using xdm, ... stop these and get console.
Also try less elegant thing such as including
/home/username/.bashrc which contain
---
f [ -z "$XAUTHORITY" ]; then
XAUTHORITY=$HOME/.Xauthority
export XAUTHORITY
fi
---
Then from account "username", do startx.
Then from xterm console, do "su". Then run root requiring GUI.
If this does not work,
