Re: Major NFS problems with mail spool and writing

Hi all,

For some reason my server/client connection for nfs seems very flaky.
Well, at least lately.

We too, started have severe NFS problems starting late last Thursday (18 July). We do tape backups of various machines via NFS. We have two machines with SCSI tape drives attached, and the machine which export directories are with woody or sid machines. The NFS connection locks up on both backup machines with the same kind of messages you are getting. The problem persisted for three days in a row, and our network services folks were not reporting enough congestion that we should have this problem.

You don't mention which NFS server you are using, but there is a differnece between nfs-user-server and nfs-kernel-server. The former warns

"Unlike other NFS daemons, this NFS server runs entirely in user space. This makes it a tad slower than other NFS implementations, and also introduces some awkwardnesses in the semantics (for instance, moving a file to a different directory will render its file handle invalid)."

which may apply to your setting.

We tried both, version 2 and 3, but no joy. We have since circumvented the problem by wasting some disk space: we rsync the files to be backed up, and then let the tape grab them locally.

If you find anything out, I would love to hear.

Cheers,

Tom
