Do you have a file called ~/.gtkrc ?

If not make one and put in:

style "user-font"
{
  font="-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-8-*-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1"
}
widget_class "*" style "user-font"


Or whatever font you want. NB. I'm not sure if the last line is
needed.
