Using ipchains in 2.4.18

I've just finished updating my server to Woody and thought I would
compile a 2.4.18 kernel and install it.
I enabled iptables and all the available options for it and, as per the
docs, I should be able to have ipchains supported as well. When I get to
the ipchains option, I find that I can't include it as a module or as
part of the kernel. I'm using xconfig to compile.
I am definitely doing something wrong here and I would be grateful if
someone could enlighten me.
Why do I still need ipchains? I will probably switch to iptables a little
later as I don't have the time right now to sit down and write a firewall script.
