Exim and Hotmail not getting along

I'm trying to send e-mail to some of my friends that use Hotmail, and
exim just can't connect to Hotmail's servers. Some of the messages have
been automatically retrying every day or so for a couple of months now.
I'm getting lots of messages like this in /var/log/exim/mainlog:

2002-07-16 11:08:40 16zmOO-0006h1-00 Remote host mx09.hotmail.com
[64.4.49.71] closed connection after HELO localhost

/var/spool/exim/db/retry.lockfile: Permission denied (euid=8 egid=8)

Connection refused

/var/spool/exim/db/retry.lockfile: Permission denied (euid=8 egid=8)
2002-07-16 11:08:40 16zmOO-0006h1-00 mx05.hotmail.com [65.54.254.129]:

Can anybody tell me what's going on?
