Have you tried killing the X server (Ctrl+Alt+Bksp)?  Switching to
other virtual consoles (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1)?  Logging in remotely?

Yes, but the keyboard seems to be died too...

That's a poor metric, since the CD player hardware is fairly
autonomous; you tell it "go" and it just plays without any software
support at all.

May be there is a log file I can read?
