    Greetings Gib:

I use these rapid reference notes when I build kernels since I don't build 
them often:
http://outcast-consultants.redmond.or.us/files/linux.doc
Abiword opens this file quite well and fast.

I think perhaps you might need to make-kpkg clean?  This is just a guess.
