You can try the xf86cfg tool, but I've better luck editing the
XF86Config-4 file by hand.

In XF86Config-4, in the Section "Device" if there is an option:

Option	"UseFBDev"	"true"

Comment it out.  This has worked for me in the past, albeit with a
Matrox G400.  Then try 'startx'.
