/var/log/dmesg is a dump of the kernel's message buffer taken shortly
after boot. It allows you to easily get your kernel boot messages even
after the message buffer has been overwritten by newer messages.

The kernel message buffer (man dmesg) only contains kernel output.
Console output can come from places other than the kernel. Check with
/etc/syslog.conf to see where the message you might want are going, but
remember that just because something gets printed on the console, that
doesn't mean it's logged anywhere.
