[OT] bash vi line editing option

hola,

i really want to use the vi line editing option with bash:

   set -o vi

however, i can't live with having to press escape before using the
up/down arrow keys to access my shell history. i live on this
functionality, and i'll never get used to having to press escape first.

is there a way to use vi line editing mode AND keep my history up/down
arrow keys without having to press escape first?

much thanks!
pete
