Hmmm, thanks for the tipoff, I'll look into that. But I doubt that is the source of my programming problem, don't you? How could it be possible that I can't run a program that just does a simple read from stdin? Also, it's not just getchar; it's getc, fgetc, fread as well. I'm totally flummoxed. James
