nfs problems

hi all,

I've been getting this message in syslog every few minutes for a few weeks
now :
myserver rpc.statd[10595]: Received erroneous SM_UNMON request from myserver
for anotherserver (which is an nfs client for myserver)
I did some search and saw that it could be a mode problem for
/var/lib/nfs/sm* directories so I chmod 777 and no change . . .
Apart from the message there didn't seem to be any real problem so I put it
aside for later.
But this morning (for the 4th time in 3 days) my nfs clients were virtually
unable to access files on their nfs mounts (it was veeerrry slow) and I had
messages in kern.log :
Apr 23 07:03:03 myserver kernel: statd: server localhost not responding,
timed out
Apr 23 07:03:03 myserver kernel: nsm_mon_unmon: rpc failed, status=-5
Apr 23 07:03:03 myserver kernel: lockd: cannot monitor 172.20.22.11

localhost seems to be fine so does access to 172.20.22.11.
the only solution I've found was /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server restart
/etc/init.d/nfs-common restart

I'm using 2.4.18-686-smp.

Any suggestions appreciated . . .
