have a look at /etc/inittab :

# Example how to put a getty on a serial line (for a terminal)
#
#T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 9600 vt100

ttyS0 is the first serial port. 9600 the speed, and vt100 the terminal type.
fiddle with those settings and after making a change run:

init q

to get the system to reread the file.
