Yes, it is a potato box - I can't recall installing anything on it from 
woody. Would compiling a 2.4.x kernel and/or upgrading to woody help? Or 
perhaps just upgrading dhcp-client?

I've got the same sort of messages. It's also one enormous file as it goes 
back over a month in time.

Interesting... for me it has gone down in the middle of the night, during the 
afternoon and during the evening. It doesn't seem to be too particular about 
when it quits.

Here's some of the more strange occurances with ping (I have 'queensu' mapped 
to the IP in my hosts.conf file for ease of use and for testing in case we 
lose DNS):

gateway:/home/dpjames# ping queensu
PING queensu (130.15.126.54): 56 data bytes
ping: sendto: Operation not permitted
ping: wrote queensu 64 chars, ret=-1
ping: sendto: Operation not permitted
ping: wrote queensu 64 chars, ret=-1
