Re: Newbie compiling kernel...

Hi Alexander,

the Debian way of compiling a kernel is using make-kpkg, which is
provided by the package "kernel-package". So, do `apt-get install
kernel-package` and follow the instructions outlined in the README.gz
file (/usr/share/kernel-package/README.gz).

Hint: The Kernel-HOWTO is also useful, although some information is not
applicabale to Debien.

Hint2: I usually do

- cd /path/to/kernel/sources (/usr/local/src/linux-2.4.10 these days)
- make menuconfig
- make-kpkg clean
- make-kpkg --revision=<hostname>.<increasing-number> kernel_image
- dpkg ../kernel-image-2.4.10_<hostname>.<increasing-number>*
- reboot

Beware, I use grub, so if you use lilo, then you'll have to reinstall
lilo.

Cheers,
Viktor
