snd module/sound setup

I'm running sid. I installed a bunch of alsa stuff, including
"alsaconf-0.4", which said that is the thing to run to configure your
sound hardware. So, I ran it, and things seemed to go well until it
actually tried to run "/etc/init.d/alsa start". It gives me an error of

Loading driver:
Starting ALSA sound driver (version none):modprobe: Can't locate module
snd
 failed.x x
Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50% x
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory x
Could not initialize the mixer, the card was probably x
not detected correctly

I've seen the "can't locate module snd" before. How do I get that to play
nice?
