Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what the OP *didn't* want to do
(taken from File::Path doc):
 
 "All of the files and directories
below each root, as well as the roots themselves,
                 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
will be deleted."
