This section says, "make 24 bpp default, use modes 800x600 and 640x480
and make virtual the *same* size as the default mode 800x600".
Therefore at 24bpp your virtual and default view modes should be the
same size.  If you Ctrl-Alt-Numpad_Minus -- do you get a change of
screen resolution to 640x480 and a scrollable virtual screen?
