I suppose you can start linux. Even if X (xdm/gdm,...) does not start,
that is not the end of life. Prsss Ctrol-Alt-F1 to gain access to
console. Or start linux with single user mode by typing 1 at prompt:
-----
boot: 1
---

Mount win partion and install missing package by "dpkg -i".

And be OK.

Ok, booting problem.

Get the original boot floppy or CD.
Boot PC with it (You may have to change booting option in BIOS)
At prompt:
-----
boot: rescue root=/dev/hda3
---
assuming your root partition of installed linux is in "/dev/hda3"

Adding "1" after above may get you into single user mode where NO X will be
started or use Ctrol-Alt-F1 to gain console access.

For mounting, see "man mount". Also leran "man fstab".

If you screwed up lilo (Sounds like it), edit /etc/lilo.conf and run
lilo to activate lilo.

I tend to like to have debian MBR (see "man install-mbr") on /dev/hda
and lilo in /dev/hdax (x=# for Linux root partition). Read "man lilo"
and "man lilo.conf" . Also how-to on multiboot.

Good luck w/ linux
