hi,

i don't know the permanent fix (since most
of my nvi work doesn't involve shorter line
lenghts), but i simply use the "magic" key stroke 
sequence at the beginning of my nvi document in mutt:

esc
:
set wraplen=<76, or 55, or 60, or whatever...>
enter

...it handles it from there.
