can't mount smbfs

I attempt to mount my win98 box known as thinkpad-wired on my linux box:

bear:~# mount -t smbfs //thinkpad-wired/E /mnt/thinkpad-winblows
session request to THINKPAD-WIRED failed
session request to *SMBSERVER failed
SMB connection failed
bear:~#

thinkpad-wireless is in /etc/hosts and the /mnt/thinkpad-winblows directory
exists. This has worked in the past.

Logs are either not showing anything useful, or I don't know where to look:

bear:~# tail /var/log/smb

Any ideas?
