More useful might be the X server and graphics card that you are
using.

If this is the kind of problem that happens when you use X with an
Avance card (where the upper bits of each character are shifted by one
bit, I remember not which way), then you need

consolechars -d

Because you need it whenever you leave X and enter a VC, I would
recommend you use the Alt-UpArrow binding in /etc/inittab so you
don't need a shell, i.e.

# Action on special keypress (ALT-UpArrow).
kb::kbrequest:/usr/bin/consolechars -d
