Perhaps you might try to enable buffer for the mp3 player.

For example I have problems on my P233 machine to run

   mpg123 some_music_piece.mp3

but 

   mpg123 -b 2048 some_music_piece.mp3

which enables a 2MB buffer for the decoded audio data is big enought for
me to avoid interupts of any kind...
