Hmm ... if you use xdm to start the xserver, have you checked the file
/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers? In mine it reads:
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp
In case you need port 6000 you have to remove "-nolisten tcp"
