sound - cannot set sampling speed

hi list,

I have VIA686 onboard sound. I compiled 2.4.0-test10 kernel
and it is working fine with alsaplayer.  But I can't use other
mp3 players like mpg123, xmms, freeamp etc.  error msgs and observations:

0. mpg123 - 'Can't open /dev/dsp!'
1. xmms   - sampling rate is not proper - plays songs fast
2. freeamp - cannot set soundcard sampling speed

What is the problem?
