debian file server

Hi all,

I have a few ix86's sharing NIS & NFS on a LAN (with alphas and
IBMs, but no matter) and i'd like to install potato2.2.17 on
my 6 PCs. The problem is i just can't figure out how to install
a file/application server properly. i use 'dselect'. i've
got a partition for /usr only on my server where i want to install
the applications, i installed as few things as possible on the
clients (to keep some room for users' homes) and i mount server:/usr
onto my client:/usr (or client:/usr/local?), but many applications
stumble on my clients just because "libxxx.so... could not be
found" or because many config files are _locally_ installed in
/etc on the server (which is not shared, sure!)...
For instance, do you install [xgw]DisplayManager locally or not?
I would think it's not necessary. As well as for ssh[d] as long
as i don't want to do any maintenance remotely. My main question
is how to urge dselect (or dpkg) to install _all_ shareable things
together so that i could mount that shared FS; Any solution?

Thanks,
seb
