I have
$ ls -l /dev/ttyS*
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 64 Jun 9 16:14 /dev/ttyS0
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 65 Oct 25 1999 /dev/ttyS1
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 66 Mar 3 1999 /dev/ttyS2
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 67 Mar 3 1999 /dev/ttyS3
and get
$ stty -a < /dev/ttyS0
speed 115200 baud; rows 0; columns 0; line = 0;
... etc.
as I'm in dialout.
You presumably need more restrictions on your ups.
Try it as root (I'm not familiar with sudo).
Cheers,
