Perhaps I have something wrong again, since you replied to
rhogee@mixing.qc.dfo.ca (my behind-the-firewall address) !

Yes.  I can't get a new .cf file to work correctly with sendmail.
The setup still works, but it's a hack.  If I can't get it to
work as advertised I will eventually drop sendmail in favour of
something else.

No, using a new sendmail with an old config file is probably
going to lead to problems eventually.
