upgrading to potato, slowly

I need several potato packages and thus would like to upgrade my slink
box.  Due to bandwidth and cost restraints I will have to do it a bit at a
time using dpkg as the main tool.

  Is this feasible?
  Is this a Good Idea?
  Is there a document that would guide me through this?
