I have sound! I am now able to play a CD through the speakers on my PC. I currently have a working boot diskette with sound compiled into the kernel. I had several problems which turned out to be due to bad diskettes. The next step will be fine-tuning the process. As you suspected, I learned quite a bit during the whole process.
