Se estiver usando o Gnome e GDM para logar, no GDM tem a opção de escolher a Sessão, escolha TWM e seja feliz!
Se estiver fazendo o login no terminal, pode executar "xinit -e twm &" ou "X & twm &" no $HOME/.bashrc ou $HOME/.profile ou $HOME/.bash_profile.
Tudo vai depender da forma como loga e carrega o X, como está fazendo?
